RMS Short Story Unit ProjectsRMS English Language Arts teachers, Lori Falisi and Mindy Benze, celebrated the conclusion of their Short Story Unit by having their students share and critique projects based on a particular story they read as part of this unit. This "Sound Cloud" reading of "The Smallest Dragon Boy" was recorded by Charlotte Moore, a writer who was profoundly influenced by this story which she read in English class when she was 12 years old. Ms. Moore shared, "I was affected deeply by the writing of Anne McCaffrey and recorded this story on the day McCaffrey died."
RMS 7th graders created their own projects after a short story unit that included reading "The Smallest Dragon Boy". The "worlds" created by Lori Falisi's and Mindy Benze's 7th grade students reflect both the stories that fired their imagination and the lived experiences that make up their own private world. "Hockeylandia" is an idealized world "that revolves around the sport of Ice Hockey," writes one young man. "Planet X" was founded by NASA with rooftop gardens, flying cars, super intelligent robots and bullet proof clothing. "In the middle realm," writes another student about her world, "people spend their days by helping the community or tending to their children . . . . They make sure everything is fair and calm between realms." |

"The Tell-Tale Heart" by Edgar Allan Poe Inspired "Prezis" and Newspaper Articles . . . .
Edgar Allan Poe studies at RMS kicked off the short story unit just prior to Halloween and the Poe Festival in downtown Riverhead. The students had a special visit from Darren St. George, who is a Poe impersonator and shared his special insights about Poe and "The Tell-Tale Heart".
